What Type of Fire Extinguisher Should I Use?
Using the right fire extinguisher in an emergency can make the difference between life and death, reduce the damage to property and increase the likelihood of keeping people safe. With fires being caused every day by different substances and in different environments, knowing which extinguisher should be used makes all the difference.
In the year 2018/2019, there were over 700,000 dwelling fires attended by fire and rescue services (GOV.UK). With such a high number equating to almost 2,000 fires a day, using the right extinguisher can help to limit the severity of each and every one of these fires.
Fires are categorised into classes which may help you when it comes to picking the right extinguisher for the building you work in. Class A fires are caused by combustibles such as wood, paper and cloth, Class B fires are started when there are flammable liquids such as petrol are involved and Class C fires are caused by gases. Class D fires involve metals whilst Class F fires are started mainly in kitchens and are caused by cooking oils and fats and finally there are electrical fires.
With a range of fire extinguishers available which are all designed to combat the above types of fires, knowing which you should have can help put a fire out much more quickly rather than causing more damage. To help you decide which fire extinguisher you may need, here is a breakdown of the different types available and which fires they are designed to combat.
Powder fire extinguishers - are an all round great extinguisher and can be used on Class A, B and C fires meaning they can help combat burning solids, liquids and gases.
Water fire extinguishers - hold a Class A rating and so are suitable for putting out fires that are caused by materials such as wood, paper and textiles. It is important that you avoid putting out electrical fires with a water extinguisher as water is a conductor for electrical fires.
CO2 fire extinguishers - ideal for electrical fires, CO2 fire extinguishers are ideal to have in buildings such as offices where electrical wires can often build up.
Mist fire extinguishers - mist fire extinguishers are great all rounders and are suitable for putting out most fires such as Class A, B, C, F and even electrical fires. Although this may sound surprising, mist fire extinguishers create a barrier around the fire which cuts off the oxygen supply.
Foam fire extinguishers - a foam fire extinguisher is handy for putting out Class A and B fires and are most suited to liquid fires so are often found in petrol stations.
Now you have seen the different types of fire and which extinguishers work for each, it will hopefully help you determine which is best for you. With different size fire extinguisher and different holders available, you can pick larger or smaller volumes that are most suitable for you.
